2010-2011 Participation

  • 2,645 students participated; 2,163 in STARS 1 and 2
  • 200 educators participated during the school year, transferring learning to the classrooms and students.
  • 366 volunteers from the MN National Guard, 3M, Augsburg College, ATK, BAE Systems, Boston Scientific, Cargill, Delta Air Lines, Ecolab, General Mills, Humphrey Institute, Institute of Technology Alumni Society (ITAS), Lockheed Martin, Medtronic, MN Wire, Merrill Corp., Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA), MTS Systems, Qwest, RBC, Seagate, Statasys, Sun Country Airlines, Thomson Reuters, Toro, Travelers, Unisys, University of Minnesota, University of St. Thomas, US Bank, US Navy, Waltek, Weber Shandwick, Xcel Energy and parent volunteers who discussed careers in science, math, technology and engineering, provided demonstrations and tours, served as guest speakers, assisted in the classroom and positive adult role models for the students, donating 2,528 hours of their time and talent.
  • 82 additional people from the MN Guard, US Navy and Marines, and other organizations provided support and services valued at $470,000.

2010-2011 Results

  • 96% of students increased their knowledge/skills in science, math, technology, and engineering.
  • Students who participated in STARS 1 and STARS 2 demonstrated an average post test score of 75% and 66% (up from 46% and 29% on pre test).
  • 94% of students responded that they desired to learn more math and science after STARBASE Minnesota.
  • 56% of students reported an interest in a career discussed or observed at STARBASE.
  • 99% of students responded that STARBASE made learning fun.
  • 98% of students responded that they would like to come back to STARBASE.
  • 100% of the teachers who participated in the program reported gains in their own knowledge, skills, and approaches to teaching and learning.
  • 98% of the teachers who participated in the programs rated STARBASE excellent (91%), or very good (9%).
  • 100% of schools reported they wanted to return.


STARBASE 2011-2012 Expected Outcomes

Goal for Student Participants: 
In the 2011-12 school year, 3,300 - 3,400 students who participate in STARBASE Minnesota’s programs will demonstrate: 
  • Increased knowledge and application of skills in science, mathematics, technology and engineering;
  • Increased interest and/or positive attitudes towards science, mathematics, technology and engineering;
  • Broader view of themselves and what careers are possible for their future, including careers in science, mathematics, technology and engineering, aviation and space;
  • Increased understanding of the importance of setting goals, taking higher level science and math courses in high school, graduating and going on to post-secondary education and training;
  • Application of work readiness skills, such as working in teams, problem solving, decision-making, collecting and analyzing data, and critical thinking.
Goal for Teacher Participants:
Teachers will report positive gains in awareness, knowledge, understanding, and/or skills.
