2008-2009 Participation

  • 3,347 students participated; 2,732 in STARS 1 and 2
  • Over 296 educators, teacher assistants, and parents participated and reinforced student learning in the classroom and/or home.
  • 344 volunteers from 3M, ATK, Best Buy, Boston Scientific, Cargill, Delta Air Lines, Ecolab, General Mills, , Lockheed Martin, Medtronic, MN National Guard, Minnesota High Tech Association (MHTA), Humphrey Institute, Institute of Technology Alumni Society (ITAS), MTS Systems, Seagate, Sun Country Airlines, Thomson Reuters, Travelers, Unisys, US Bank discussed careers in science, math, technology and engineering, provided demonstrations and tours, served as guest speakers and positive adult role models for the students, and donated 2,839 hours of their time.

2008-2009 Results

  • 96% of students increased their knowledge/skills in science, math, technology, and engineering.
  • Students who participated in STARS 1 and STARS 2 demonstrated an average post test score of 73% and 69% (up from 39% and 41% on pre test).
  • 90% of students responded that they desired to learn more math and science after STARBASE Minnesota.
  • 53% of students reported an interest in a career discussed or observed at STARBASE.
  • 98% of students responded that STARBASE made learning fun.
  • 96% of students responded that they would like to come back to STARBASE.
  • 90% of students responded they want to learn more math, science, technology and engineering.
  • 98% of the teachers who participated in the program reported gains in their own knowledge, skills, and approaches to teaching and learning.
  • 99% of the teachers who participated in the programs rated STARBASE excellent (93%), or very good (6%).

STARBASE 2009-2010 Expected Outcomes

Goal for Student Participants: 
In the 2009-10 school year, 3,300 - 3,400 students who participate in STARBASE Minnesota’s programs will demonstrate: 
  • Increased knowledge and application of skills in science, mathematics, technology and engineering;
  • Increased interest and/or positive attitudes towards science, mathematics, technology and engineering;
  • Broader view of themselves and what careers are possible for their future, including careers in science, mathematics, technology and engineering, aviation and space;
  • Increased understanding of the importance of setting goals, taking higher level science and math courses in high school, graduating and going on to post-secondary education and training;
  • Application of work readiness skills, such as working in teams, problem solving, decision-making, collecting and analyzing data, and critical thinking.
Goal for Teacher Participants:
Teachers will report positive gains in awareness, knowledge, understanding, and/or skills.
