Come share your love of learning! Inspire youth to explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Below you will:

  • Learn more about Scientists & Engineers In-The-Round
  • Indicate Your Days of Involvement
  • Provide Information About You & Your Demonstration Idea

    What Does Volunteering Entail?

It is a 45-minute commitment, including set-up time, in which you will introduce yourself, describe your job, why you chose it, and some interesting uses of math and science. You will spend 10 minutes with three different groups of 8-10 students each, doing a quick demonstration of a product or experiment to expand students’ understanding of how STEM applies in the workplace. You’ll also talk to students about what they need to do to prepare to be a professional like you and reinforce the importance of education and training.

    Examples of Demonstrations

    Paul Northey
    Paul Northey
    3M

Demonstrates the science of retro-reflectivity used by 3M to make nighttime safety products like reflective clothing, traffic signs and vehicle license plates.

    Aparna Bhave
    Aparna Bhave
    Boston Scientific

Demonstrates the use of Cardiac Stenting through the use of a Pig Heart Cast while discussing the technology and process of designing stents.

    Ken Timmerman
    Ken Timmerman Medtronic

    Demonstrates
and discusses pacemakers and defibrillator devices and leads with the use of an educational model of the human heart.

    Amanda Bryan
    Amanda Bryan
    Ecolab

Discusses polymer chemistry by demonstrating how soap breaks the molecular bonds of fat and proteins in milk causing the milk to swirl as emphasized and observed with food coloring.

    Leif Knutson
    Leif Knutson
    Microsoft

Demonstrates motion science through the use of the Kinect while discussing the process and development of new Microsoft technologies.

Please Describe Your Demonstration: The demonstration will take place outside unless it rains.

Some of our volunteers have brought "give-aways" from their corporation for the children. You do not need to bring any "give-aways". If you plan to do this, enough should be provided for all 120 children.

I plan to bring "give-away" items for my presentation (not required or necessary).

Thank you for your interest in volunteering!
