Sojourner Truth Academy Completes Mission to Mars!

Fifth grade scientists and engineers from Sojourner Truth Academy in North Minneapolis have just completed their mission to Mars at STARBASE Minnesota.

Instructors Radar and Luna noted that these teams showed great perseverance as they worked through engineering tasks. Students reported that they had fun and were surprised how much they achieved in a short week!

Being on the 133^rd Airlift Wing of the Minnesota Air National Guard clearly inspired students. When Radar asked students what they would like to do in their future, one student, callsign RJ, reported “I’d like to join the military so I can help people.”

We congratulate these teammates on their successful mission, and wish them the best in their bright futures!

One student, callsign “Gizmo”, said “I was really surprised at all of the different kinds of science, you know how there’s science and then there’s hands-on science? Well, I was pretty shocked how much hands-on science we did. I was like, Dang! Beakers!”

When asked what they are inspired to do after their week at STARBASE, a student, callsign “Void”, reported “I want to learn more about being an engineer. I really liked STARBASE, it was very fun! I’m probably going work at STARBASE.”

Students' ability to learn outside of the traditional classroom setting and curriculum is incredibly valuable. The equipment at STARBASE (Ozobots, rockets, AR/VR, 3D printers) aren't found in every school, so this enables students to gain exposure to unique (and fun!) STEM equipment.

The staff and curriculum are fantastic, the activities are really fun, and the students get to use a variety of software and technology that they aren't normally exposed to, like using different types of robots, playing around with CAD software, and building their own rockets.
