Students Explore STEM Careers with Augmented Reality!

“Simply put, we believe augmented reality is going to change the way we use technology forever.” —Tim Cook, CEO, Apple Inc.

Students at STARBASE Minnesota are using Augmented Reality (AR) to explore careers of astronaut, robotics engineer, geologist and more!

Using this technology, students can reach into their future and experience what it might be like to design a robot, walk on the surface of Mars, and apply technology to a Mars mission- all the while connecting how these devices benefit a wide range of STEM careers.

Students experience what it is like to be a robotics engineer or astronaut as they use iPads to land a rover on Mars and walk into a portal to view the Martian landscape right in front of them.  They use the iPads to walk right inside 3D models, investigating Mars and the engineering behind a solar cell, jet engine, or NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover.

So, what do the kids have to say about it? Week after week, our STARBASE team hears of the impacts that this technology has had on our students. The STARBASE student callsign “Dr. Strange” said “I want to learn more about AR. The AR we used was really life changing and using it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.” STARBASE student callsign “CR-7” said “It was my first time doing Augmented Reality. I mean I’ve never done it in my life, but then I had a chance at STARBASE.” Augmented Reality truly is a highlight of students’ time here at STARBASE.

STARBASE Minnesota’s advancements in technology continue to inspire students in STEM and help plant the seeds of a generation ready to take on any technology that comes their way. Augmented Reality truly will change the world.

These STARBASE geologists dive into our Augmented Reality Sandbox; a multi-colored, interactive, digital 3D map projected on sand. They explore and construct landforms found on Mars and think about how those landforms came to be on the Red Planet.

Using Microsoft’s HoloLens 2, we are paving the way for future STEM career opportunities, opening students’ eyes to the possibilities of Augmented Reality and building their confidence in being successful with new technology. These Mixed Reality headsets are being used in manufacturing, architecture, engineering and construction, patient treatment in hospitals, and improving student outcomes in school. Organizations that are using these include the United States Military, NASA, Automakers Volvo and Volkswagen, and Airbus in the Aerospace industry.  They will become a staple in training and a multitude of other uses in the years to come.
